STEM is all around us and is a core part of the curriculum. It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – subjects which help children develop a multitude of skills and aid with their understanding of the world. As it evolves and we become more digital as a society, they become increasingly important for children to learn. We’ve collaborated with a prep school in Surrey to share more on its importance and ways that you can help your child with their STEM.
Every day we are met with new problems, whether that be disease, growing environmental concerns or day to day issues. We must think innovatively to come up with solutions, which is why we need STEM. STEM education teaches children to think differently and experiment. It breeds new ways of thinking which can inspire and help raise a new generation of inventors. In today’s world we have many pressing issues to deal with such as climate change. STEM allows us to understand it better and think of solutions. We’re able to engineer cars that are cleaner and cause less harm to the environment.
The Changing World Around Them
To meet the demands of the changing world, the curriculum is adapting, and children are being taught new concepts that previously hadn’t been included, like coding. This will enable children to access greater career opportunities and future proof themselves against further technological advancements.
An Understanding of The World
Regardless of whether your child wants to pursue a technical career or not, there are lots of ways that STEM helps us every day. For example, it teaches children about the world around them and helps them to make sense of it. Children are taught about the science behind every day phenomena, like the water cycle, how seasons change and principles such as gravity.
STEM education also helps the development of key transferable skills such as problem solving, creative thinking and analytical thinking. Children run into problems and are encouraged to think of creative solutions. They are taught how to experiment, review their findings and other pieces of evidence, and produce their own theories.
Maths is a basic life skill needed for everyday tasks like paying bills, managing time, and solving a range of problems. They will also need them to do well in other aspects of school, such as technology and science as they go hand in hand.
Helping Your Child with STEM
As with their other subjects at school, it’s vital that your child practices what they’ve learned. It will allow them to familiarise the themes they’ve been introduced to and get to grips with the concepts. While you may think your options are limited at home, there are plenty opportunities to teach children STEM at home. In fact, every room should have examples for you to explore. The kitchen has several. You can explain the concept of heat and particle theory, conduction and get your child to practice their maths.
STEM Activities to Explore with Children
If coding’s an area that you know little about, coding games can be an excellent way to help your child build on their skills. They are straight forward and explain concepts to children whilst they play in an immersive game where they are able to create their own code.
As STEM’s all around us, there’s very little you need to teach your child about it. Water for example presents lots of different learning opportunities. You can teach your child about objects that float/sink, evaporation etc.
Build a Volcano
If your child’s a science lover, they will enjoy this activity. Using your own paper mache mix, a bottle, balloon, baking soda and vinegar, you can create your own craft volcano that erupts.
Baking involves several chemical reactions and is fun for children. They can explore how ingredients interact with each other and how particles change from solids to liquids and vice versa.
Interactive Maths Games
It can be tricky to hold a child’s attention. Interactive games are an excellent means for teaching children maths and can get them to practice what they are learning at school.
